About Dr. Samia

I am Dr. Samia Hussein, a public health leader and consultant with over 15 years of experience advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in healthcare and organizational systems. As the Director of the Office of Multicultural Health Equity at the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, I lead statewide equity initiatives, design and facilitate DEI training programs, and provide strategic consultation to executive leaders, policymakers, and multidisciplinary teams.


Holding a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) with a concentration in Diverse Populations and Health Equity, I specialize in bridging research, workforce development, and practical solutions to drive measurable change. My work includes evaluating workforce initiatives, conducting organizational equity assessments, and delivering evidence-based strategies that improve cultural responsiveness and health outcomes.


In addition to my public sector leadership, I am the Founder/CEO and Principal Consultant of Heyya Consulting. As a minority woman consultant, I named my firm Heyya —  which means "she" or "her" in Arabic—to honor my heritage and the powerful role women play in driving change as it reflects my commitment to amplifying marginalized voices globally bringing culturally responsive solutions t0 the public health workforce.


I partner with organizations and individuals to build inclusive practices, strengthen leadership capacity, and develop health equity-focused strategies. My expertise has been recognized through national speaking engagements, published research, and honors such as the ASTHO Diverse Executives Leading in Public Health (DELPH) Scholar designation.


With a passion for creating equitable systems and empowering diverse communities, I help clients translate vision into action—driving sustainable change that aligns mission, culture, and impact.

Our history

Heyya Consulting was founded by Dr. Samia Hussein, a seasoned public health leader and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategist, to bridge the gap between policy, practice, and equity-driven outcomes.


Her expertise has been shaped by years of frontline engagement—coordinating health workforce pipeline programs, conducting equity research, and delivering trainings that address systemic barriers in healthcare and education. Through this experience, Dr. Hussein recognized a critical need: organizations often lacked tailored, practical support to embed equity into their operations, workforce, and leadership development strategies.


In response, she launched Heyya Consulting to help organizations and individuals translate their equity and public health goals into actionable, measurable results. Today, the firm builds on Dr. Hussein’s track record of success, combining evidence-based methods, real-world leadership experience, and a deep commitment to social impact.
